Francis Xavier Sosu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Madina, has expressed concern over the proposed jail sentences for homosexuals outlined in the anti-gay bill.
He advocated for community service as a more effective deterrent for individuals engaged in homosexual practices.
In an interview in Accra, the lawmaker criticized the idea of imprisoning individuals based on their sexual orientation, emphasizing the need for alternative approaches.
Addressing concerns about certain aspects of the law, particularly custodial sentences, Sosu stated, “I don’t believe somebody must go to prison because of their sexual orientation, I don’t believe that.”

He suggested community service as a viable alternative, highlighting its potential as a form of public accountability. Sosu argued that subjecting offenders to community shame, such as cleaning public toilets, could serve as a stronger deterrent against such behavior.
He emphasized the importance of allowing judges to consider community sentences in all circumstances, alongside fines and custodial sentences.
The Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2024, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, was unanimously passed by Parliament on Wednesday, February 28.
