The Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has appealed to the media for support in advocating for the swift passage of the Broadcasting Bill into law.
During her visit to the Multimedia Group Limited in Accra, she emphasized the significant progress made on the bill under the current administration, noting that it has reached its final stage before being presented to Parliament.
Abubakar highlighted that the Ministry has conducted several stakeholder engagements, validation exercises, and consultations with the Attorney General’s office to refine the draft. “We are about 90% through with the scope of work, based on the inputs that have come from our stakeholders,” she noted, underscoring the need for continued media support to ensure the bill’s timely enactment.

In addition to discussing the Broadcasting Bill, the Minister encouraged the management of the Multimedia Group to participate in the 3rd Cohort of the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme. This initiative aims to train 100 journalists nationwide, enhancing their skills and capabilities. She also highlighted other media support initiatives like the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM), stressing the government’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for journalists and upholding press freedom.
The CEO of the Multimedia Group, Ken Ansah, echoed the need for regulation in the media industry, expressing concerns about declining standards. He also expressed gratitude for the support from IFPIM and assured the Minister of their dedication to fulfilling their mandate.
