An ongoing investigation has revealed that 2,637 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have gone missing at the Tema Port. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances behind the disappearance, raising concerns about port security and logistics management.
A joint investigative committee has uncovered 2,637 missing containers destined for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG)—more than double the initial estimate of 1,300. The revelation has intensified scrutiny over logistics mismanagement at Tema Port, prompting urgent calls for accountability and systemic reforms.
In an exclusive interview with 3News.com, Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communications for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, confirmed that the missing containers had been traced to multiple terminals across Tema Port.
Rockson revealed the cross-agency investigative team – including National Security, Transport Ministry, GPHA, and Customs – had successfully located all missing containers by April 30, 2025. The breakdown showed:
• Meridian Port Services: 860 containers
• GPHA Terminals: 1,237 units
• Amaris Terminal: 194 containers
• ATLAS Manufacturing Terminal: 20 units
• Already recovered: 272 (secured by National Security)
The investigation uncovered a critical compliance failure – 2,437 containers (92% of the total) had remained uncleared for more than 60 days, accumulating substantial demurrage fees. This discovery highlights systemic inefficiencies in ECG’s import clearance processes.
Authorities confirm the ECG will need to engage with port operators to clear the substantial accumulated fees from the overdue containers.
In a swift response, the Chief of Staff has ordered the immediate transfer of all located containers to ECG-controlled warehouses, requiring a complete inventory audit.
