EPCG Dela Parish was privileged to host the first phase of 2023 campaign on creating awareness on hypertension on 21st May, 2023 at the EPCG Dela Cathedral, Ho Kpodzi. This initiative was organized by the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology in conjunction with Ho Teaching Hospital
Speaking to Dr.Aba Folson who is a consultant cardiologist at the Ho Teaching Hospital and the Treasurer of the Ghanaian Society of Cardiology, she said the month of May is dedicated to be the month of hypertension where they educate and create awareness on what hypertension is and screen people.

She explained Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure as a medical condition characterized by abnormally high pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is measured using two values: systolic pressure (the higher number) and diastolic pressure (the lower number). Normal blood pressure is typically around 120/80 mmHg.
Dr. Aba further revealed that Hypertension is the most common cause of several diseases and complications. She highlighted some of the causes of hypertension as Genetics and family history and Lifestyle factors.
Regarding Age as risk factor, the Cardiologist mentioned that risk of hypertension increases with age. She added that, as people get older, the blood vessels lose flexibility and become stiffer, leading to increased blood pressure. Other causes of Hypertension are attributed to Chronic conditions, Stress and Medications and substances abuse, she added.

Interesting to note is that in many cases, the exact cause of hypertension is unknown, and it is referred to as essential or primary hypertension. However, adopting a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and taking prescribed medications can help control and manage high blood pressure effectively, Dr Aba cautioned. She further mentioned that, Regular check-ups and consultations with a healthcare professional are essential for monitoring and addressing hypertension.
Dr.Aba Folson shared ways by which hypertension can be prevented,below are some preventative measures;
- Maintain a healthy weight
2.Adopt a balanced diet
3.Reduce sodium intake
4.Increase potassium intake
5.Limit alcohol consumption
6.Engage in regular physical activity
7.Quit smoking you smoke
8.Regular check-ups
Remember, prevention is key, but if you have already been diagnosed with hypertension, it’s essential to follow your doctor’s advice, take prescribed medications, and maintain a healthy lifestyle to manage and control your blood pressure effectively.

Dr. Aba Folson expressed gratitude to leadership and congregants of EPCG for giving them the opportunity to have this campaign awareness creation and their active participation.
