Former Information Minister and Member of Parliament, John Tia, has passed away. Tia, who served as the Information Minister under the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, breathed his last on Sunday, March 24, at the Upper East Regional Hospital, as reported on Joy TV. He had been battling a brief illness.

John Tia’s involvement in politics spanned several decades. He began his political journey in 1982 when he assumed the role of Press Secretary of the Upper East Regional Secretariat of Peoples Defence Committees/Workers Defence Committees established by the Provisional National Defence Council military government.

In addition to serving as Information Minister, Tia represented the Talensi constituency as a Member of Parliament from the inception of the Fourth Republic in January 1993 until 2012. He also held the prestigious position of a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament.

President Mills appointed Tia as Minister for Information in 2009, a testament to his trusted leadership and dedication to public service. Furthermore, he contributed to Ghana’s diplomatic relations by serving as Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba during former President John Mahama’s administration.

Despite his contributions, Tia faced challenges in his political career. He experienced electoral defeat when he lost his bid to retain the Talensi seat to Robert N. Doameng Mosore, an independent candidate.

In 2016, Tia opted out of contesting in parliamentary elections, signaling a shift in his political aspirations. His passing marks the end of a chapter in Ghanaian politics, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to his constituents and the nation as a whole.
