Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Dame, has called on Ghana’s Judiciary to remain impartial and uphold the law, particularly as the country approaches the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) on October 2, 2024, held at the La Beach Hotel in Accra, Dame emphasized the importance of administering justice based on the law, without being influenced by emotions, public opinion, or societal pressure.

The conference, themed “Improving the Security and Welfare of the Judiciary for Effective Justice Delivery,” served as a platform for Dame to remind the Judiciary of their vital role in maintaining peace, stability, and impartiality during the upcoming elections. He stressed that the Judiciary’s mandate to adjudicate disputes involving the state, individuals, and businesses must be fulfilled with neutrality.

Dame highlighted that justice must be dispensed equally, regardless of social standing, stating, “There is the need to ensure that crime or wrongdoing does not go unpunished for any class of society, privileged or underprivileged.” He urged judges to prioritize the interests of the State while ensuring that justice is applied without bias.

With rising tensions ahead of the elections, Dame warned against actions that threaten peace and security, such as incitement to violence and attempts to disrupt essential public services through demonstrations. He urged the Judiciary to remain resolute in upholding the law, noting that any disruption of national security must not be tolerated in a democracy.

In closing, Dame reiterated the Judiciary’s responsibility to ensure that justice is delivered according to the law, ensuring the integrity of the 2024 elections and the continued stability of Ghana.
