Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have declared their intention to commence a strike on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, citing accommodation issues as the reason.

The Ghana Medical Association has given its approval for the strike, which will exclusively affect new admissions. All doctors have pledged to adhere to the Association’s directive.

This implies that patients who would have otherwise been admitted for treatment or care at KATH may now need to seek medical attention elsewhere or encounter delays in receiving care.

The decision to initiate the strike was prompted by the issuance of eviction notices to over 20 doctors from their current residences, purportedly sold to private developers.

Consequently, patients who would have been admitted for treatment or care at KATH may need to seek medical attention elsewhere or face delays in receiving care.

The decision to strike was made following an emergency meeting, during which the doctors unanimously resolved to stand in solidarity with their colleagues facing eviction.

Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Medical Association, revealed that the doctors were given a one-week ultimatum by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to vacate their homes.

Expressing dismay at the abrupt displacement of hospital staff, Dr. Baidoo highlighted an agreement with Manhyia Palace for new accommodations before the land handover, which has purportedly been disregarded.
