Between January and November 2023, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported 5,256 fire breakouts, representing a 4.92% decrease compared to the same period in 2022.
During the same timeframe, the GNFS attended to 532 traffic incidents, which resulted in 2,557 injuries and 263 fatalities.
Chief Fire Officer Julius Kuunuor credited the decrease in fire incidences to the GNFS’s public fire safety education programs.
The GNFS conducted Fire Safety Audits and Inspections in 14,157 public and residential buildings to ensure occupant safety.
Despite these efforts, there were 656,591 hoax calls or false alarms reported during the year, emphasizing the need to prevent the abuse of emergency services.

The GNFS is working with the government to acquire fire appliances and equipment in 2024, including dual-purpose tenders, water tankers, utility vehicles, command vehicles, and rapid intervention vehicles.
Partnerships with Ghana Water Limited aim to ensure a consistent and adequate water supply for firefighting through the construction of Fire Hydrants and drilling of boreholes.
During the celebration of the GNFS’s 60th anniversary, 10 retired Officers were honored for their dedicated service.
Minister for the Interior Ambrose Dery expressed appreciation for GNFS personnel, emphasized achievements, and reiterated the government’s commitment to equipping the GNFS with modern firefighting and rescue equipment. He also shared fire safety tips for the festive season.
