Some students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) were left stranded as lecture halls were locked on Thursday due to a strike by members of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWUG). The union, responsible for setting up lecture halls, initiated the strike as part of a national executive mandate.

The TEWUG strike has led to the withdrawal of services by its members, affecting various operations at the university. Essential services provided by divisions such as maintenance, electrical, masonry, carpentry, and plumbing have been shut down.

Charles Arthur, the KNUST local chapter chairman of TEWUG, confirmed members’ compliance with the strike but accused university management of interference. He claimed that casual staff were taking over some jobs that were previously handled by union members.

While acknowledging the strike’s impact on essential services, Arthur stated, “If you come to the maintenance and other essential services, the place is shut down, and we have casual workers trying to take over, and the casuals take instructions from us and not directly from management.

He also noted that the union was aware of management attempting to use casual workers but asserted that the strike was ongoing, and members were adhering to the directives.
