After five years of litigation, former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi and his co-accused were released by an Accra High Court.

Her Ladyship Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds issued the decision after the prosecution did not call any witnesses during the trial. The Republic presented five possible witnesses but failed to obtain testimony.

The last witness made an odd condition that made things more difficult: he would not testify unless he was permitted to wear a mask. The court found no reason to proceed with the lawsuit because no evidence was given.

The Court of Appeal’s decision on January 30, 2025, which reaffirmed the requirement that a fair trial be held within a reasonable timeframe, was a significant contributing factor in the result. This gave the High Court the confidence to exonerate the defendants.

Initially upsetting Ghana’s football community, the case—which resulted from an investigative exposé by writer Anas Aremeyaw Anas—led to Nyantakyi’s resignation in 2018.
