The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has moved to clarify news reports concerning a pledge to stabilize the struggling Ghana Cedi within 100 days.
The Mahama 2024 Campaign team clarified that Mahama had never made such a commitment. Instead, during his address at the 8th Ghana CEO Summit, Mahama outlined a detailed plan aimed at addressing the nation’s economic challenges.
Mahama’s spokesperson, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, highlighted his deep understanding of Ghana’s economic issues and reiterated that Mahama did not pledge to stabilize the Ghana Cedi within 100 days. Correcting the misinformation, Mogtari explained that Mahama presented a strategic plan to tackle the underlying causes of the currency’s instability.

Quoting directly from Mahama’s speech, the spokesperson emphasized that the NDC’s primary focus would be on stabilizing the economy and restoring a steady currency. Mahama stressed that his approach involved more than just a quick fix, emphasizing the importance of fiscal discipline and responsible economic management. He proposed measures such as cutting government expenditures, combating waste and corruption, and broadening the tax base to boost revenue, essential steps for achieving long-term currency stability.
Additionally, Mahama suggested simplifying the Value Added Tax (VAT) system, eliminating the controversial e-levy, and reducing burdensome taxes on businesses and households. He argued that these actions would not only stabilize the currency but also stimulate economic growth.
