President John Dramani Mahama, through the Ministry of Defense, has deployed personnel from the 48 Engineers Regiment to conduct an initial engineering assessment and provide estimates for the permanent construction of a bridge at Asuokaw in the Upper West Akim District of the Eastern Region.
Reacting to a viral video on social media showing a young boy carrying his younger brother across a river on a log to school, President Mahama assured in a Facebook post that work would commence urgently to resolve the challenge for the community and schoolchildren.
The military is expected to collaborate with district road engineers to ensure the swift construction of the bridge.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Awatey, along with Members of Parliament for Upper and Lower West Akim Constituencies and the military, visited the community and reassured residents of a speedy resolution.
“We have seen that the defense ministry has taken an interest because of the brave nature of the young man. Our president, John Dramani Mahama, is also interested in the issue. We are here today to tell the people here that our president has seen their plight, and the defense ministry has also seen their plight.
“Leaving here, we are going with one assurance that we are a government that delivers on our promise. As we leave here, we want to assure you that very soon the project will begin, and the people here are going to have their children cross the river in peace,” she stated.
The Member of Parliament for Upper West Akim Constituency, Emmanuel Drah, described the situation as worrying and noted that crossing the river had become the safest option for children to avoid frequent vehicular knockdowns.
“It is troubling to see children crossing the river from this community to the other community. As I indicated, the main roads that link the communities are always busy, and the children thought it wise that it is rather safer to cross from this side to the other side than using the main roads. But now that the rains have started, the water levels have gone up. So, if something is not done urgently, we are going to have so many stories,” he cautioned.
