John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has outlined a significant healthcare policy in the party’s manifesto aimed at providing free primary healthcare services.
Under this policy, healthcare access from the polyclinic level down to Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds would be free of charge for all Ghanaians.
Mahama further explained that while healthcare below the district hospital level would be free, services at district hospitals and higher-level facilities would continue to be covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He emphasized plans to overhaul and adequately fund the NHIS to ensure its effective operation.
During the NDC’s manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama detailed the party’s broader vision for the health sector, which includes:
- Removing caps on the National Health Insurance Levy.
- Prioritizing timely payments to healthcare providers.
- Establishing the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund to support chronic disease patients.
- Expanding healthcare infrastructure and facilities across the country, including a 500-bed Specialist Children’s Hospital in Accra, a Specialist and Trauma Hospital in the Oti Region, and modern hospitals in underserved areas like Bawku and Yendi.
These initiatives are part of the NDC’s broader commitment to providing “Quality Healthcare for All” if they recapture power in the upcoming elections.
