President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to transform the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, widely known as Ridge Hospital, into a fully-fledged teaching hospital. This initiative forms part of his broader agenda to enhance healthcare delivery throughout the Greater Accra Region.

Addressing supporters during his ‘Thank You Tour’ at the Old Ghanata Astroturf in Dodowa on Friday, May 16, Mahama emphasized the pressing need to improve healthcare quality in response to growing demand and to strengthen advanced medical services in the capital region. He noted that the proposed upgrade of Ridge Hospital is a key step toward achieving better health outcomes.

To support this goal, Mahama announced that Phase Two of the Ridge Hospital project—long overdue—will finally be constructed. This expansion will not only increase the hospital’s capacity but also equip it to serve its dual purpose as both a regional and teaching hospital.

The President also disclosed that once upgraded, Ridge Hospital will be affiliated with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. This partnership is intended to improve specialist training in the region and significantly reduce the need for patients to be referred to other regions or abroad for care.

In addition to upgrading Ridge Hospital, Mahama outlined efforts to broaden access to primary healthcare through the expansion of Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds. These expansions will target peri-urban communities like Bortianor, Kpone, and Shai Osudoku, where healthcare access remains a challenge.

He further pledged that every new CHPS compound built under his leadership will include accommodation for healthcare staff. Existing compounds, where possible, will also be upgraded to ensure better living and working conditions for medical personnel stationed there.

Mahama underscored the significance of these initiatives as part of his administration’s commitment to building a healthcare system that is accessible, equitable, and capable of serving the evolving needs of all Ghanaians.
