The jury in the Major Mahama case has delivered a unanimous guilty verdict for 12 out of the 14 people charged in connection with Major Mahama’s death. The convicted individuals were found guilty of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and abetment of murder.
Among the 12 convicted is the area’s Assembly Member, who was accused of inciting the local population against Major Mahama during the tragic incident. Two of the defendants have been acquitted and discharged, as the jury deemed them not guilty of the charges brought against them.
The background of the case involves the lynching of Major Mahama while on duty in Denkyira-Obuasi, Central Region, on May 29, 2017. It was later revealed that the military officer was mistakenly identified as a robber. Over 50 people were initially apprehended, with 14 ultimately facing prosecution.

In July 2022, the High Court overruled a no-case motion submitted by the defense lawyers, who argued that the prosecution had not presented a compelling case against the accused. Justice Mariama Owusu rejected this claim, determining that the prosecution had established sufficient evidence of willfully inflicting injury and murdering Major Maxwell Mahama.
The accused were then summoned to launch their defense. The recent unanimous guilty verdict by the jury reflects the culmination of the trial proceedings.
