Man arrested for allegedly murdering son over cassava dispute.

In Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State, the local police have apprehended a man named Innocent Uko for the alleged murder of his 26-year-old son.

The tragic incident unfolded when Uko reportedly killed his son, burned the body, and then disposed of the remains in an abandoned pit toilet. The motive behind this shocking act is believed to be a dispute over harvested cassava.

The suspect, a resident of Ebe Ikpe village in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state, reportedly confessed to the crime during questioning by investigators. The arrest came about following a complaint filed by Chief Akpan Aniekan and village council chairman Sylvester Akpan to the local police.

According to reports from, the Akwa Ibom Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon, conveyed that Uko not only killed his son using a machete but also attempted to conceal the crime. He did so by setting fire to the deceased’s body before disposing of it in a pit toilet within his own compound.

Upon receiving the report, police officers from the Essien Udim Divisional Headquarters visited the scene to investigate. The burned remains of the deceased were retrieved and taken to the morgue. Uko was subsequently apprehended by law enforcement and, during the interrogation, admitted to the killing. He stated that his actions were motivated by his son’s alleged bad character and constant harassment and embarrassment.

SP Macdon mentioned that a thorough investigation into the incident is ongoing and that the suspect will be brought to court to face charges related to the alleged crime. This tragic incident has left the local community shocked and saddened, highlighting the need for continued efforts to prevent and address such incidents of violence.
