The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) is disappointed with the Ministry of Health’s response to the statewide strike that began on June 17, 2024.

The union announced the strike because it was dissatisfied with the lack of good working conditions for its members, despite over two years of negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).

In a statement dated June 17, 2024, the Ministry of Health urged MELPWU to end the strike and return to the negotiating table, claiming great progress in negotiations and the Government Negotiations Team’s agreement on the majority of the requested issues.

However, Dr. Franklyn Armah, MELPWU’s First Vice Chairman, expressed unhappiness with the Ministry’s approach, pointing out that the Ministry’s appeal was made publicly rather than directly to the union. He noted that the union had legally notified the Ministry of its intention to strike but had not received an invitation to continue negotiations.

“We believe that it is extremely unjust. We have not been called; we have not been invited to critical meetings to discuss this situation,” Dr. Armah said, slamming the Ministry for not communicating directly with MELPWU.
