Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has spoken out to clarify that his remarks about Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, have been misunderstood.
“They’ve got it wrong. What I meant was that since 1957, no government has done more for Ghana than Nana Akufo-Addo’s. In our politics, telling the truth gets you labeled ungrateful, while lying gets you praise. I was raised to be honest and brave,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained.
He made these comments when he met with the Omanhene of the Wassa Amenfi traditional area and President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, on Wednesday, July 10.
During his introduction at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh had asserted that no Ghanaian president has done more to develop the country than President Akufo-Addo, not even Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
“I can confidently say that from 1957 onward, no president has done more for Ghana than Nana Akufo-Addo. Even if you include Kwame Nkrumah, none of them has protected and developed Ghana like Nana Akufo-Addo,” he said.

He emphasized, “President Akufo-Addo has done incredible things for this country. We can’t let what happened in 2008 happen again. It would be best for Nana Akufo-Addo to pass the baton to Dr. Bawumia.”
These statements have stirred controversy, prompting the Convention People’s Party (CPP) to demand an apology.
The CPP said, “We urge the Honourable Minister to do the right thing within 24 hours for the sake of our country’s image. He should resign from all his governmental and political roles and issue an apology and retraction.
“If he fails to do so, we call on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove him from his position as Minister of Energy, and we ask Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw him as his running mate. Ghanaians and Nkrumaists worldwide will have no choice but to protest if these actions are not taken within 24 hours.
“There’s a saying, ‘Don’t boast before the battle is won.’ With an election ahead, the government would do well to listen to the people, or their expected defeat could be even worse than predicted.”
