On Friday, February 10, 2023, Ghanaian DJ and businessman Mark Kwesi Arthur, well known as DJ Azonto, made certain comments that quickly became the subject of controversy.
He asserts that the success of his viral hit song, “Fa No Fom,” outpaces that of Black Sherif, the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards’ “New Artist of the Year.”
He claims that the song, which has just under 160,000 views as of this writing, has received more worldwide attention than any other song the Konongo Zongo musician has ever put out.
When both tracks were presented in the same category at an awards ceremony, DJ Azonto triumphed with “Fa no Fom” over Black Sherif’s “Kwaku The Traveller,” supporting his allegation.
“Facts are facts, and the truth is only one. We know that Blacko is an international artiste, and I give him that respect. But none of Blacko’s songs has travelled more than Fa No Fom. It’s a fact,” he said.
He added that his “Fa No Fom” had better streaming numbers than Blacko when he considers data from locations in the Chad, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
The majority of the twelve awards DJ Azonto has won so far have been given to him locally, including the Face of Ghana Youth Awards, the Ghana Premier Awards’ Most Consistent Artiste of the Year, the Festival of Arts Conference’s African Spotlight Artiste of the Year, and the Ghana Premier Awards’ Most Influential Artiste of the Year.
