The National Health Students Association of Ghana (NAHSAG) has commended former President John Dramani Mahama for pledging to provide free sanitary pads to female students in basic and senior high schools if elected in the 2024 general elections.
NAHSAG recognizes the importance of this initiative in addressing the challenges faced by many young girls during their menstrual cycles, which can often lead to school absenteeism and dropouts. By ensuring access to free sanitary pads, the policy aims to alleviate the financial burden on parents and guardians, enabling more girls to continue their education uninterrupted.
The association applauds Mr. Mahama’s commitment to reviving this policy, which was previously introduced during his administration but faced criticism from the then-opposition. NAHSAG believes that the reintroduction of this initiative demonstrates the NDC’s understanding of the needs of the girl child and their dedication to promoting gender equality in education.
Furthermore, NAHSAG welcomes the NDC’s promise to establish menstrual pad banks at the national and district levels, ensuring a consistent supply of pads for distribution to beneficiaries. The association also commends the party’s plan to scrap taxes on menstrual pads, making them more affordable for all users.
