The National Cathedral Secretariat has announced its need for $100 million to import steel required for the construction of the project.

During an interview on Okay FM, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer of the Secretariat, justified the expenses incurred in the cathedral’s construction thus far.

He mentioned that two underground floors have already been completed, and the main remaining task is the installation of a steel structure. The construction progress of the cathedral has come to a halt as the required $100 million for the steel structure has not yet been raised.

After finishing the foundation, we need money that we will use to import all the steel we need. The steel component of the cathedral will be built before it is brought into the country for us to fix.

After fixing it, we will be left with the concrete and marble cladding and some few works. So, this is why there is a setback in the construction of the cathedral.

We need about $100 million to import the steel. The cathedral is not a small building. It will be a structure, we have never seen in Ghana before,” he said.

Previously, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, made strong criticisms regarding the National Cathedral project. He described it as the most corrupt, irresponsible, disrespectful, and scandalous undertaking in Ghana’s history, emphasizing its enormous scale and audacity.

Additionally, he revealed that an American consultant involved in the National Cathedral project provided an official address that led to a warehouse, implying some form of irregularity or deception in the project.
