The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the three striking teacher unions to end their strike. The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) declared a nationwide strike on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

They cited the government’s alleged neglect in addressing their conditions of service as the reason for their action. Among the grievances outlined were the withholding of teachers’ salaries, unilateral alterations to timetables without union consultation, and delays in distributing laptops to teachers.

The National Labour Commission (NLC), in a statement signed and issued by its Chairperson, Justice Kwabena Asuman-Adu on Thursday, has ordered the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) to retract their decision of declaring a nationwide strike on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

The NLC invoked Section 133(1) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) to issue this directive, citing non-compliance with Section 159 of the same Act. The statement advised the unions to adhere to the order accordingly.
