The Divisional Executive Council of the Public Service Workers’ Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division, has announced an indefinite strike starting June 10, 2024. This decision comes in response to the government’s failure to address poor working conditions and to negotiate better service conditions for NIA staff.
The union issued a statement on Sunday, June 9, explaining that their initial strike notice in March 2024 was deferred following the intervention of the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations. However, the government’s lack of progress in the negotiation process has now prompted the union to proceed with industrial action.

Key issues cited for the strike include the government’s failure to address undue delays in the negotiation process and the lack of institution-specific allowances for NIA staff. The PSWU has called on its members nationwide to comply with the strike decision until further notice, resulting in the suspension of services at all NIA offices, including district, regional, and premium centers.
This strike is expected to significantly impact the operations of the NIA, disrupting services related to national identification processes across the country.
