Nufialaga Mawufemor Korbla Nonyigbey, the spokesperson of the Nogokpo Traditional Council, has emphasized the Council’s demand for an apology from Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, the founder of Perez Chapel International. In response to the Archbishop’s comments referring to Nogokpo as the “demonic” headquarters of the Volta Region, Mr. Nonyigbey stated that a justification of the remarks is insufficient.
Instead, the Council seeks a genuine apology from Archbishop Agyinasare. To address the issue and find a peaceful resolution, the spokesperson has called for a meeting between the Archbishop and the Council within the 14-day ultimatum period. Failure to comply with this request may result in potential consequences.
During an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Mr. Nonyigbey reiterated the Council’s stance and emphasized the importance of an apology from Archbishop Agyinasare. The Nogokpo Traditional Council holds the view that a genuine apology is necessary to address the concerns raised by the Archbishop’s comments. They have urged the Archbishop to seize the opportunity to meet with the Council and resolve the matter amicably. The spokesperson’s statements highlight the Council’s firm position and the urgency they attach to the issue at hand.
The 14-day ultimatum given to Archbishop Agyinasare indicates the Council’s expectations for prompt action and resolution. Mr. Nonyigbey’s interview on Eyewitness News serves as a public declaration of the Council’s demand for an apology, underscoring their readiness to pursue appropriate measures should their request be ignored. The coming days will reveal whether the Archbishop will accept the invitation to meet with the Council or if further consequences will arise from the situation.
“The action taken by him was not an apology but rather an attempt to rationalize his behavior. What we are seeking is a genuine apology, and for that to occur, he must engage in a meeting with the leaders of the community. When one offends their elders, the proper course of action is to apologize to them, rather than simply attempting to provide justification. Our primary desire is to be treated with respect.” He stated that
Mr. Nonyigbey underscored that Nogokpo is a tranquil place inhabited by compassionate individuals and expressed his belief that Archbishop Agyinasare’s remarks were disrespectful and offensive.
“When someone makes an allegation, and it is not clarified, that allegation may end up destroying your future,” he added.
The spokesperson for the Nogokpo Traditional Council clarified that belonging to a particular cultural setting does not automatically imply being malevolent or wicked.
In the meantime, the National Peace Council has intervened to mediate the dispute between the Nogokpo Traditional Authorities and Archbishop Agyinasare.
Rev Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the Peace Council, also commented on Eyewitness News, expressing concerns that if the deadlock is not promptly resolved, it could have adverse effects on peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance in the country.
He appealed to the Traditional Authorities, Perez Chapel International, and other stakeholders to remain composed and not succumb to provocations, assuring them that efforts are being made to address the situation.
