The La District Court has remanded a final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School for two weeks, pending further investigation into the murder of his classmate, Edward Borketey Sackey.
The incident, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over familial wealth, has deeply shocked the school community. The court did not accept the student’s plea and set a return date of September 19, 2024, to allow the police more time to investigate the case.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has called for public restraint and patience as investigations proceed, urging against speculation. In a statement issued on September 4, 2024, the GES expressed sorrow for the loss and extended condolences to Sackey’s family, friends, and the school. The GES Director-General and officials have visited both the school and the victim’s family to offer support.
The GES also assured the public that they are collaborating with authorities to ensure a thorough investigation, with their own internal review expected to conclude within two weeks. They emphasized that calm has been restored at the school and that steps are being taken to maintain a safe environment for students and staff, while working to prevent such incidents in the future.
