During the commissioning of a 430-kilometre natural gas pipeline by Genser Energy in Kumasi on Wednesday, April 17, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II urged the government to privatize the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), citing the need for these institutions to function more effectively.

Expressing his perspective, he emphasized that privatizing these entities would lead to improved performance and outcomes.

The Asantehene highlighted the importance of government policies that involve the private sector, suggesting that such collaboration could attract more investors to the country and subsequently create more employment opportunities.

He underscored the inefficiencies observed in government-run establishments like VRA, GRIDCo, and ECG, proposing that diversifying ownership by involving the private sector could lead to better management and financial gains.

As for the Electricity Company, he emphasized the need for a shift towards privatization, suggesting that holding onto state-owned industries without adequate resources and amid financial challenges is unsustainable.

He urged a pragmatic approach, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between the roles of government and the private sector. In his view, this approach would lead to more realistic and sustainable outcomes.

The Asantehene commended the success of Genser Energy, highlighting it as a testament to the effectiveness of private sector involvement and its ability to attract investors.
