The Tema General Hospital has issued a response following a viral video depicting its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in darkness, where nurses appeared to be struggling to care for babies during a power outage.

In a statement, the hospital clarified that the incident was a brief generator trip-off and not a prolonged power outage as depicted in the video.

Dr. Richard Anthony, the medical director of the hospital, confirmed the occurrence of the incident on Tuesday, March 26. He explained that the interruption in power occurred when the facility experienced a disruption in the power supply from the national grid, leading to a reliance on its power plant.

While some social media users speculated that the outage was a result of a major disconnection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), citing threats to 91 hospitals over a GH¢261 million debt owed to the power distribution company, the hospital’s press statement did not confirm this assertion.

Furthermore, the hospital emphasized that no fatalities resulted from the technical hitch, reassuring the public of the safety and well-being of the patients under their care.

Below is the full statement.
