Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that 8,463 Ghanaians have successfully received the country’s newly introduced chip-embedded passports.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on May 17, the minister cited official figures from the Passport Head Office, describing the milestone as a testament to the government’s commitment to efficient service delivery. “Mahama’s government is here to serve you diligently, and to keep our pledges to you,” he wrote.
The rollout of the chip-embedded passports began earlier this month, with Mr. Ablakwa personally participating in the first round of home deliveries on May 9. Accompanied by officials from Ghana Post, he visited recipients and handed over the new passports at the addresses they had provided during application.
During the interactions, the minister took time to educate passport holders on how to care for the new documents, emphasizing the importance of preserving the chip’s functionality. The delivery envelopes are secured with tamper-evident seals to ensure the safety and authenticity of the contents.
These chip-embedded passports represent a significant upgrade in Ghana’s travel documentation, boasting advanced security features that align with global standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The system was developed by Biometric Travel Solutions, with Troskit and Ghana Post managing logistics and courier services. The delivery model operates on a 24-hour basis to guarantee swift service.
For applicants who face delivery challenges due to address issues, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made provisions for them to collect their passports from designated Ghana Post locations without incurring additional costs.
The ministry has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all eligible Ghanaians receive their passports promptly and securely through this enhanced system.
