The Ghana Police Service has launched an official inquiry into claims that Minority Leader and Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin was involved in a physical altercation.
The alleged incident occurred during a recent demonstration organized by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its allied political groups.
In an official statement, the Police Service confirmed that it has analyzed multiple video recordings from the protest, showing an altercation between an officer and the legislator.
After initial assessment of the evidence, authorities have formally contacted Parliament’s Speaker, Alban Bagbin, seeking cooperation to make Hon. Afenyo-Markin available for questioning regarding the assault allegations.

The official communication further confirmed that the police officer involved in the incident will provide complete cooperation to investigators throughout the inquiry process.
The demonstration in Accra was organized by the NPP in protest against the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, which the party claims was politically driven.

Although the protest remained predominantly peaceful, intermittent clashes erupted between demonstrators and law enforcement officers at various stages of the march.
