President Akufo-Addo has made a decisive move by relieving Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta of his duties, a decision eagerly awaited by many, including over 80 NPP MPs.
Critics attribute his removal to perceived mismanagement of the economy, leading to the country entering into an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and facing the consequential challenges. The Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin, officially announced the dismissal on February 14, 2024, which, on Valentine’s Day, could be interpreted as a significant and perhaps symbolic decision.
Speculations surrounding Ofori-Atta’s health and its potential impact on his ministerial duties have been raised, considering his reported enlarged liver. Under his tenure, the cedi depreciated, and inflation surged, causing dissatisfaction among the majority of Ghanaians. Despite referencing World Bank and IMF reports to suggest an economic turnaround, Ofori-Atta’s awareness of the challenges faced by the populace is acknowledged.

Akufo-Addo’s decision to dismiss Ofori-Atta, previously praised for his economic handling, carries various implications. One possibility is providing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with an opportunity to spearhead economic recovery efforts and garner public support leading up to December 7.
Alternatively, Ofori-Atta’s departure could be linked to health concerns, requiring him to take time for self-care. Regardless of the cause, many are expected to view Akufo-Addo’s decision as a positive development, potentially enhancing his public image.
