President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to operationalizing the Komenda Sugar Factory, addressing the long-standing challenges that have stalled its production.
Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region on Thursday, February 6, 2025, President Mahama emphasized his vision to transform the region into Ghana’s leading sugar producer. He acknowledged the factory’s difficulties, particularly the shortage of raw materials, and assured residents of his government’s determination to see the project through.
To expedite progress, President Mahama has directed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, to provide a comprehensive status report on the factory. This assessment is expected to guide the administration’s next steps in revamping operations and ensuring the facility contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s sugar industry.
“I have asked the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to provide me with a status update on the Komenda Sugar Factory,” Mahama stated. “We’re determined to proceed with this project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana.”
The Komenda Sugar Factory, a long-promised industrial project, has faced numerous setbacks since its commissioning. With this renewed focus, stakeholders anticipate a fresh commitment to addressing the factory’s operational challenges and boosting local sugar production.
