The Ghana-Nurse-Midwife Trainees Association (GNMTA) has issued an urgent call for the correction and immediate disbursement of 12 months’ worth of unpaid allowances owed to rotational nurses and midwives.

According to a statement released on Sunday, September 29, 2024, the association stressed that despite rotational nurses and midwives completing their one-year mandatory service, they have not received the allowances due to them for over a year.

The GNMTA, which represents these nurses and midwives, pointed out that the ongoing delays have caused significant financial and emotional hardship for its members. The association noted that while the allowance amounts were increased between September 2022 and 2023, some interns have only recently begun receiving payments, totaling about GH¢9,000 for the 12 months—an average of GH¢750 per month. This amount falls far short of the expected GH¢1,393.93 monthly allowance that is supposed to be paid, according to the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) document.

In response, the GNMTA is calling on the Ministry of Health, the Ghana Health Service, and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to take the following actions:

  1. Correct the discrepancies in the allowance payments and ensure timely disbursement without further delays.
  2. Pay the correct allowance amounts stipulated in the SSSS, along with any arrears owed to the interns.
  3. Communicate clearly with rotational nurses and midwives regarding the allowance structure and any changes to avoid confusion and unrest.

The association emphasized the urgency of resolving this issue to alleviate the financial pressures on the affected healthcare workers and ensure fair treatment in line with their service to the country.
