The once unwavering bond between Ghanaian music powerhouses Shatta Wale and Sarkodie has been clouded by controversy and discord, perplexing fans who are curious about the root cause of their falling out.
In a significant revelation, Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has finally shed light on the origins of their rift during a Twitter Space session with media personality Serwaa Amihere on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
As per the ‘Ayoo’ singer, the spark that ignited this conflict traces back to the monumental Glo Mega-Concert that transpired on October 25, 2018. This event of monumental proportions marked a turning point in the dynamics between Shatta Wale and Sarkodie.
Given their prominent roles in the Ghanaian music landscape, their joint performances held immense significance, representing a collaborative and harmonious alliance. Their synchronization on demanding a fee of $150,000 for their appearances in the Glo deal underscored their unity and shared aspirations.
However, the narrative took an unexpected twist when it came to the actual execution of the deal. For reasons that have remained undisclosed, Sarkodie chose to accept GHC120,000 (approximately $20,000 less) from Glo, diverging from their initial mutual agreement.
This discrepancy between their initial understanding and the ultimate financial settlement became a source of resentment.
“They paid him like GHC 120,000 but we had agreed on $150,000 and this matter is from 4-5 years ago so when I heard it, I was like I spoke to this person a few days ago so I called him and I asked him and he said, Yes, they’ve paid us good money but I told you they can pay more even in dollars,” Shatta Wale revealed.
Further exacerbating the situation, the event organizers seemed to undervalue Shatta Wale’s contribution, offering him $131,000 instead of the initially agreed-upon $150,000.
This move dealt a significant blow to Shatta Wale’s perception of his own value and his standing within the industry.
The ultimate factor that drove a wedge between these two music giants was their contrasting reactions to this financial discrepancy. Shatta Wale had called for a boycott of the show, viewing the lower payment offer as an insult to their value and credibility.
From Shatta Wale’s perspective, their unity should have translated into standing together to negotiate their deserved compensation. However, Sarkodie opted to take a different route by proceeding to perform at the event and accepting the lower payment.
Shatta Wale’s disappointment and frustration found an outlet on social media, where he openly expressed his displeasure.
This public airing of grievances marked a definitive turning point in their relationship. The consequences of this rift continue to resonate not only within the music industry but also among their dedicated fan bases.
