The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the brutal murder of Prof. Amedeke, a lecturer from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), who was earlier reported missing on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

Following concerns raised by colleagues, police investigations led to a shocking discovery at the lecturer’s Effutu Gyahadze residence in the Effutu Municipality of the Central Region. The lecturer, identified as Prof. Amedeke, was found murdered and buried within his compound under a heap of sand.

Police sources revealed that the deceased’s throat had been slit, and his intestines removed before being buried just 23 metres from the house. Bloodstains found at the scene led investigators to the burial spot, where his body was exhumed.

A suspect, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, was arrested and found in possession of several items belonging to Prof. Amedeke, including Samsung mobile phones, a laptop, a 50-inch television, a Toyota Fortuner car key.

He is currently in custody at the Ateetu Police Station, assisting with investigations, and is expected to be arraigned in court soon.

This tragic incident brings back chilling memories of another high-profile academic murder in 2020, when Prof. Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Law Faculty, was also found murdered in his Adjiringanor home in Accra under similarly mysterious and gruesome circumstances.

Prof. Benneh’s death, suspected to have occurred three days before discovery, sent shockwaves through the academic community, with parallels drawn to the murder of former MP J.B. Danquah-Adu. Prof. Benneh was a highly respected scholar with degrees from Cambridge and Leiden, and his case remains a dark moment in Ghana’s academic history.

The murder of Prof. Amedeke has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of academic professionals in Ghana. The similarities between these two cases — gruesome methods, delayed discovery, and suspects close to the victims — are raising urgent questions about protection mechanisms for intellectuals and professionals.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are ongoing, and they are committed to bringing all perpetrators to justice.
