GRIDCo has attributed the nationwide power outage in Ghana that occurred on the evening of September 8, 2023, at 7 PM to a disruption in its system.
This outage affected various parts of the country, including major cities like Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale.
GRIDCo has expressed its apologies for any inconvenience caused by this disruption and has conveyed its gratitude for the patience shown by its customers as they worked diligently to restore power to all affected areas. According to GRIDCo, efforts to restore power began promptly, and by 8 PM, approximately three-quarters of customers had their electricity supply restored.
In a statement the power suppliers said,
“The Ghana Grid Company Ltd., (GRIDCo), the ‘Operator’ of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), informs the public that a system disturbance occurred at 19:03 GMT, affecting parts of the country.
Restoration commenced immediately, and three-quarters of customers received supply as of 21:00 GMT. Power restoration efforts continue as generation is restored.
GRIDCo apologizes for the inconvenience caused and appreciates your patience as we continue to restore power to all affected customers.”
Back in June, the Chamber of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) had issued a warning that they might disrupt the power supply to the Ghanaian populace due to substantial outstanding debts owed to them by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This issue had created concerns about potential power outages.
However, by August, ECG managed to fulfill its financial obligations by clearing its debts with all Independent Power Producers (IPPs) for the months of June and July. This action helped alleviate the immediate threat of power supply disruptions in the country.
