Three teacher unions in Ghana, namely the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), have initiated a nationwide strike effective Wednesday, March 20, 2024.
The decision to strike arises from what the unions perceive as the government’s negligence in addressing their conditions of service.
Among the grievances highlighted are the ongoing withholding of teachers’ salaries, unilateral changes to timetables without consulting the unions, and delays in the distribution of laptops to teachers.
Speaking to the media, the National President of GNAT, Isaac Owusu, emphasized that all teachers should adhere to the directive.
“The distribution of laptops to all teachers is a concern. The frequent changes to the school calendar without consulting the teacher unions are disrupting the smooth operation of the service. Additionally, the blocking of teachers’ salaries by the Office of the Special Prosecutor without following the laid-down procedures is a major concern.”
“In light of the aforementioned circumstances and considering the delays and unmet promises from the employer and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, as well as threats from our members, we, the pre-tertiary teacher unions, stand in solidarity with our members and hereby declare a nationwide industrial action effective today, Wednesday, March 20, 2024, to push for our demands,” he announced.
