A tragic accident on the eastern corridor road between Peki-Adzokoe and Tsibu has claimed the lives of at least 20 individuals.
The accident involved a Grandbird bus heading from Accra to Chinderi in the Oti Region and a Toyota mini-bus traveling from Hohoe to Accra.
The impact of the collision was severe, tearing the Toyota mini-bus into two and causing the Grandbird bus to veer off the road, landing on its side.
Tragically, 15 passengers aboard the mini-bus lost their lives instantly, while five passengers on the Grandbird bus also perished in the crash, which happened at approximately 11:40 a.m. on Wednesday.
The rescue operation was a joint effort involving the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and staff from the Ghana Water Company Limited.
The GNFS team had to employ extrication tools to access the trapped conductor’s lifeless body inside the larger Grandbird bus.
Additionally, more than 20 injured passengers received medical treatment at the Peki Government Hospital, comprising eight men, 12 women, three boys, and two girls. Regrettably, it was later confirmed that three children were among the deceased.
As of the time of reporting, the confirmed casualties included 10 women, six men, and four children.
Attempts to reach officials at the Peki Government Hospital for further information were unsuccessful.
