Prior to the general elections of 2024, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications and Digitization, made a statement indicating that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not concerned about internet surveys and online polls.

She referred to numerous online polls that showed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP candidate, trailing behind John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as a hoax.

Minister Owusu-Ekuful emphasized that while social media may be a platform where opinions regarding the NPP’s potential defeat are expressed, the elections themselves would not take place on social media.

She cited the example of Peter Obi, the leader of the Labour Party of Nigeria, who received significant attention on social media before the most recent elections in Nigeria. Despite the attention, Obi did not win the presidency, highlighting the difference between online popularity and actual election outcomes.

Owusu-Ekuful stressed that the ultimate determination of election results would occur at the polling stations. In her view, winning the elections would depend on the votes cast by the electorate rather than the online discussions and surveys.

“The job is on the ground… when people are making noise, I ask who has seen a ballot box on social media before? Have you ever seen voting taking place on Facebook or Instagram?

“We vote at the polling station; so, if you have something to show do it there, it is not about the noise. If it is about noise on social media, then Peter Obi would be the president of Nigeria by now. So, let’s be patient because the work is on the ground,”

she said in Twi in an interview on Adom FM.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, expressed her belief that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration had achieved significant success in various sectors of the economy. She stated that Akufo-Addo would be remembered as one of Ghana’s greatest presidents.

Owusu-Ekuful drew a parallel with the historical perception of other former presidents. She mentioned that both Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, and former President John Agyekum Kufuor were initially regarded as the worst presidents during their time in office. However, over time, opinions of them have changed.
