In a press statement, the Volta River Authority (VRA) revealed that the Akosombo Dam spillage was concluded on October 30, 2023.
The Volta River Authority alerted the public, particularly those living in the vicinity of the Lower Volta River, that the controlled release of water from Akosombo dam ceased on September 15, 2023, according to a statement.
The Volta River Authority (VRA) has officially ceased the release of water from the Akosombo Dam while still dedicated to providing assistance and rehabilitation services to the affected areas until they return to their usual state. The VRA expressed appreciation to the government bodies and stakeholders who aided in helping the affected communities.
Starting from September 15, the outflow of additional water from the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams began due to the increasing water levels. After a few weeks, many inhabitants of the Lower Volta Basin experienced the destruction of their dwellings and farmland caused by the ensuing floods. All in all, nine districts were impacted by this occurrence.

In the South, Central, and North Tongu districts of the Volta Region, the damage has been especially great. Several places, including Battor, Tefle, Mepe, Sogakope, Adidome, and Anlo, were engulfed by water. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO) reported that more than 26,000 people were forced to leave their homes and become displaced.
To help those affected by the floods, many institutions and people offered aid. President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahama Bawumia traveled to the affected locations to lend their support. The National Democratic Congress’s leadership and the Minority caucus also provided aid to the victims.
The VRA has additionally undertaken a considerable disinfection and fumigation campaign in the regions that were flooded. This operation is expected to encompass areas such as Mepe in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, while the floodwaters are slowly going down.
During a conversation with JoyNews, Ing. Kwame Osei Mensah Darkwa, the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator of the VRA, highlighted the VRA’s dedication to guaranteeing the security and livability of dwellings, public spaces, and the complete community after the floods.
