Jamaican music icon Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, has shared a heartfelt plea with young people in Jamaica and around the world: stay away from crime.

In a video that’s been making the rounds on social media, the 48-year-old Dancehall superstar is seen leaving the Tower Street Adult Correctional Center. He took a moment to talk to journalists and fans who had gathered outside. “Avoid crime; prison time is just wasted life,” he urged.

Shatta Wale, another big name in the music world, reinforced this message by tweeting a video of Vybz Kartel’s release, adding his own words: “Tell the youth to stay out of crime. It’s not worth it, a waste of life, a waste of time, brother.”

This message is particularly poignant coming from Vybz Kartel. Back in March 2014, he and three others were convicted for the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams. The prosecution argued that Williams was killed over missing guns and that Kartel had lured him to his home, where he was beaten to death.
