Former Deputy Transport Minister, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has challenged the authority of the Transport Ministry to order the arrest of private transport drivers for raising their fares.
She argues that the ministry does not possess the jurisdiction to take such actions. Mogtari asserts that in light of continuous increases in fuel prices, drivers have the prerogative to adjust their fares accordingly, citing economic circumstances as the rationale behind their decisions.
In a post on X on Tuesday, April 16, Mogtari expressed her stance: “The Transport Minister or is it the Ministry of Transport has absolutely no power to ask the Police to arrest drivers of private vehicles who have increased fares because of the recent increase in fuel prices!”

Responding to drivers’ concerns regarding the necessity of fare increases due to rising fuel prices, the Ministry reiterated ongoing negotiations for new public transport fares with Road Transport Operators.
