According to Hashmin Mohammed, the Press Secretary to the Minister for Education, the 2026 placement cycle saw a massive concentration of demand for Category A schools. Data reveals that 313,283 candidates selected Category A schools as their first choice, even though these institutions only declared a total of 76,417 vacancies.

This creates a situation where nearly four students are competing for every single available seat in schools like Achimota School and Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (Presec). Mr. Mohammed explained on JoyNews' The Pulse that the system is not failing but is simply operating within the constraints of available space: “The system, the CSSPS system declared a vacancy of 859,828. So if you look at the vacancy in the system, it is even far more than the number of candidates who sat for the exams”. Despite this abundance of total seats, the pressure remains on Category A, while Category B and Category C schools hold 250,366 and 468,652 vacancies respectively.To address these challenges, the Ministry expanded the selection process this year, allowing candidates to choose up to eight schools to provide more placement options.

Mr. Mohammed also addressed rumors of students being placed in schools they did not pick, stating, “It is impossible for you to pass and then you will be allocated into a school you haven't chosen because that's why we expanded the choices”. When a candidate's high demand for a first choice cannot be met, the system automatically moves to their second through fifth choices based on placement requirements.

For those who did not secure an automatic match, including students who may have obtained a grade nine in core subjects like English or Mathematics, the self-placement portal offers a second chance to select from remaining vacancies. So far, 527,932 candidates—representing 87.3 percent of qualified students—have been successfully placed, and the Ministry has set up national and regional resolution centers to assist those still facing difficulties.
