Iñaki Williams Bids Emotional Goodbye, Retires from Ghana's Black Stars Team

Athletic Bilbao’s star forward, Inaki Williams, officially announced his retirement from international football.

On September 11, 2026, Williams took to social media to share his decision, stating clearly that he felt the time was right to bring his journey with the Ghana national team to a close.

The Athletic Bilbao captain, who switched his international allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022, brought immense European experience and a tireless work ethic to the squad.

Since making his debut in June 2022, he became a fixture in the national setup, representing Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While fans often hoped to see the same goal-scoring explosiveness he displays in La Liga, Williams managed two goals across 28 appearances for the Black Stars. However, his impact was often measured by his dedication and the pride he took in wearing the national colors.

In an emotional post on X, Williams expressed the profound personal meaning his time with the team held for him. He wrote,

I leave happy, proud, and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt. Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots, and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.

He extended his gratitude to his family, his supporters, and the fans who stood by him throughout the ups and downs of his international career.

Even as he steps away from the pitch, he has pledged to remain a vocal supporter of the national team from the stands.

His final words to the fans were particularly touching:

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me. Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am. Medaase. Always Ghana.
