The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has clarified that negotiations for the 2027 base pay are actively ongoing, with final conclusions expected next week.
This update dispels recent widespread rumors claiming that labor unions and the government had settled on a 6% salary increment.Internal sources within the FWSC confirm that no agreement on percentage has been reached and deliberations under the Single Spine Salary Structure remain open.
Organised Labour continues to demand a substantial pay increase, pointing out that while national inflation has slowed down, actual market prices remain high.
Union representatives stress that a lower inflation rate only reflects a slower price increase, not an actual drop in everyday expenses like food, rent, and transportation.Highlighting this struggle, Dr. Nsiah-York, President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), explained:
inflation being stable does not mean that prices of goods and services are the same.our purchasing power certainly are reduced compared to a year on year".
Following the 9% base pay increase agreed upon for 2026, the finalized 2027 percentage will dictate public sector wages from January 1 through December 31, 2027.
The final 2027 base pay agreement will be crucial for protecting public sector purchasing power ahead of the upcoming national budget presentation. As labor leadership pushes for fair compensation, all eyes remain on the FWSC's final decision next week.
