Asante Kotoko Coach Eric Tinkler Resigns After Just 4 Games

Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has officially resigned after leading the Porcupine Warriors for just four Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches.

The decision marks one of the shortest managerial tenures in recent Ghana Premier League history, coming merely three months after Eric Tinkler was appointed in July ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The South African manager, known across the continent for his previous coaching stints with Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City, was tasked with mounting a strong title challenge for the Porcupine Warriors.

However, his short spell yielded mixed results across four league games, recording one victory, two draws, and one defeat.

The turning point occurred over the weekend during Kotoko's Matchday 4 fixture, where a heavy 2-0 defeat to Aduana FC handed Tinkler his first loss in charge.

The outcome pushed the Porcupine Warriors down to ninth position on the league table, increasing pressure on the bench.

Following the defeat, Tinkler formally approached the club’s leadership to request an immediate release from his contract, citing personal reasons.

Attempting to protect the club's stability early in the campaign, Asante Kotoko’s Board of Directors held extensive discussions and engaged in "meaningful negotiations" to persuade Tinkler to stay.

However, after recognizing the manager's firm stance, the club ultimately accepted his resignation.

In an official club statement, Kotoko confirmed:

The Board of Directors of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has agreed to the request of its Head Coach, Mr. Eric Tinkler, to be released from his contract with the Club effective immediately for personal reasons.

Despite the unexpected exit, the administration expressed appreciation for Tinkler’s service during his brief period in Kumasi.

The management noted:

The Club is grateful to Coach Tinkler for his professionalism and commitment to the success of the club during his rather short stint with the Porcupine Warriors and wishes him well in his next endeavors.

To maintain focus on upcoming league fixtures, Asante Kotoko announced that the remaining technical team will take charge immediately under the leadership of Director of Football Stanley Purl Menzo, ensuring the squad stays aligned with its seasonal objectives.
