20-year-old midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has officially been nominated for the prestigious Men's Young Player of the Year award at the 2026 CAF Awards.
The 20-year-old midfielder earned his spot on the ten-man continental shortlist alongside prominent young talents including Algeria's Ibrahim Maza, Cameroon’s Christian Kofane, Côte d’Ivoire's Christ Inao and Yan Diomande, Egypt's Hamza Abdelkarim, Morocco's Ayoub Bouadi and Abdellah Ouazane, Mali's Ismaël Kamissoko, and Senegal's Ibrahim Mbaye.
Yirenkyi's nomination caps off an extraordinary 2025/26 campaign with Danish Superliga side FC Nordsjælland, where his dynamic midfield performances earned him the club's Player of the Season award alongside the official Danish Superliga Young Player of the Year title.
His compelling domestic form quickly sparked intense interest across Europe, resulting in a landmark €30 million transfer to English side Coventry City in August, establishing him as one of the most expensive Ghanaian football exports in history.
Beyond his club achievements, Yirenkyi captured international headlines during the World Cup in June.
In Ghana's opening fixture against Panama, the midfielder delivered a historic moment by scoring the winning goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure a 1-0 victory for the Black Stars.
That crucial strike made him the second-youngest Ghanaian player ever to score at a World Cup tournament.
Yirenkyi went on to feature in all four of Ghana's World Cup matches, helping the national team successfully navigate Group L before falling 1-0 to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Caleb Yirenkyi’s rapid rise from Denmark’s Superliga to the World Cup stage demonstrates the immense depth of talent emerging from Ghanaian football.
As the December 7 ceremony in Lagos approaches, his nomination stands as a proud celebration of national achievement on Africa's biggest football stage.
