In a major digital milestone, the National Identification Authority (NIA) has rolled out an online replacement service designed specifically to eliminate this burden for global citizens.

Announced on October 19, 2026, by NIA Executive Secretary Wisdom Koku Deku, this digital portal enables Ghanaians residing across 11 designated nations to replace missing, stolen, or damaged Ghana Cards directly from their places of residence abroad.

Ghanaians living in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, United Arab Emirates (UAE), France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, and Denmark can now access the NIA online application portal at register.nia.gov.gh.

By accessing this official digital platform, applicants are able to initiate and submit their card replacement requests without having to travel back to Ghana.

To begin the process, users must select the designated replacement option on the portal, provide their primary personal information, and strictly follow the online instructions regarding supporting documentation, fee payments, and scheduling any required verification appointments.

However, the authority emphasizes that merely filling out and submitting an online application form does not automatically guarantee instant approval or complete registration.

Applicants are strongly urged to thoroughly review all guidelines and instructions specific to their situation prior to submitting data or making payments.

To successfully verify eligibility for a card replacement, applicants must upload valid and mandatory primary identification documents.

Accepted proof of identity includes a valid Ghana Passport, a Birth Certificate issued by Ghana's Births and Deaths Registry, a Certificate of Acquired Citizenship, or an official Naturalization Document.

The NIA explicitly cautions applicants regarding non-qualifying documentation, noting in its guidelines:

Please note that other Government-issued ID cards and documents do not qualify as mandatory documents for confirming eligibility to apply for the Ghana Card.

In terms of financial requirements, the NIA's published 2026 fee structure sets the card replacement fee for applicants residing in countries outside Africa at the cedi equivalent of US$115.

By comparison, local card replacement in Ghana costs GH¢200 at an NIA district office and GH¢520 at an NIA Premium Centre.

Applicants must keep in mind that all application fees paid through the portal are strictly non-refundable regardless of the outcome or the stage reached in processing.

Consequently, all transactions must be conducted exclusively through the official payment channels specified by the NIA.

For Ghanaians residing locally or visiting Ghana who prefer in-person expedited support, the replacement service has also been activated across four operational Prestige 24/7 Centres located in Labone (Accra), Sakumono (Greater Accra), Bantama (Kumasi), and Suame (Kumasi).

The authority plans to open an additional Prestige 24/7 location at Amakom in Kumasi shortly, alongside rolling out a broader online update service to facilitate future personal detail adjustments.

The NIA's online replacement service represents a transformative convenience for the Ghanaian diaspora, making identity management accessible, transparent, and secure from anywhere across the 11 supported countries.

By preparing mandatory documents like your valid Ghanaian passport or birth certificate and following official portal guidelines carefully, you can restore your national identity card without unnecessary travel expenses.
