Football superstar Kylian Mbappé is finding out the hard way that off-the-field banter can carry a massive financial price tag.
Fresh off scoring twice in Real Madrid’s 2-1 El Clásico victory over Barcelona, the 27-year-old French forward has landed in hot water in Asia.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated across social media platforms featuring the Real Madrid forward discussing internet memes.
In the clip, Mbappé shared that the funniest meme he had ever seen featured his face photoshopped onto an image of
some guy -- I think he's a Chinese dictator.
The image in question was an apparent superimposition of Mbappé’s face onto Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China.
Although the authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified by news agencies like AFP Fact Check, the reaction from major corporate sponsors in China was instantaneous and decisive.
China's beverage titan, Dongpeng Beverage, immediately pulled the plug on its relationship with the footballer.
In an official statement, Dongpeng declared,
Our company firmly opposes and has a zero-tolerance policy towards any behaviour that offends national sentiments, confirming that "with immediate effect we are terminating all cooperation with Kylian Mbappe.

Shortly thereafter, Mengniu—China’s largest dairy producer—followed suit by severing all commercial ties with the French star.
Mengniu echoed Dongpeng's stance, stating, "
With immediate effect our company is terminating all cooperation with Kylian Mbappe, while emphasizing that they hold a "zero-tolerance policy towards any words or actions that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.
The news created a massive storm on social media, with topics such as "Dongpeng Beverage ends cooperation with Mbappe" quickly rising to become the top-trending topic on the Chinese social platform Weibo.
This commercial setback comes during a turbulent week for the striker, who recently missed out on winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or trophy to England’s Harry Kane.
The situation serves as a stark reminder of how quickly international brand deals worth millions can evaporate when cultural and political sensitivities are breached on global platforms.

Kylian Mbappé's sudden loss of lucrative Chinese corporate partnerships demonstrates how offhand comments in the digital era can instantly dismantle international business ties.
While Mbappé continues to deliver standout performances on the pitch for Real Madrid, navigating off-pitch diplomacy and respecting cultural norms remain equally vital for global icons.
