President John Dramani Mahama has officially directed the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees overseeing Ghana's National Cathedral project. This directive was formally communicated in an official letter dated September 18, 2026, signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.

In the correspondence addressed to the leadership and members of the board, Minister Ayariga noted, “His Excellency the President has directed the dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project with immediate effect.” The dissolved board was chaired by Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah. Under the instructions laid out by the Ministry, the trustees are required to liaise with the project consultant and formally hand over the National Cathedral project site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026. The government explained that this formal site handover is essential “to allow government to determine the future of the project.” Official copies of the directive were distributed to key administrative authorities, including the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House, the Secretary to the President, the Deputy Minister, the Ministry’s Chief Director, and the Executive Director of the Ghana National Cathedral Secretariat. On behalf of the President, Minister Ayariga extended gratitude to the outgoing trustees for their national service, stating,

“I wish to thank you for your commitment to promoting the Christian faith in the country.” This recent executive action follows earlier administrative steps taken against the project's management structure. On July 18, 2025, President Mahama initiated legal steps to disband the board, following the earlier dissolution of the National Cathedral Secretariat which took effect on May 1, 2025.

These administrative measures stemmed from a Deloitte and Touche audit examining the Secretariat's operations between 2021 and 2023. The audit report highlighted a series of financial irregularities, procurement breaches, and a lack of due process in handling state assets. To mitigate further financial exposure, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice has been tasked with taking legal steps to lawfully terminate the National Cathedral project contract, preventing additional financial losses to the state.Furthermore, the Auditor-General has been requested to execute a comprehensive forensic audit into all operations surrounding the project to ensure full accountability and transparency.

The dissolution of the National Cathedral Board of Trustees signifies a decisive attempt by the government to restructure oversight and address persistent governance issues surrounding the project.

As the October 31 handover deadline approaches, public focus turns toward the outcome of the requested forensic audit and the government's final decision regarding the site's future.
