Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has officially retired from the Gabon national team. As the country's all-time leading goalscorer and long-serving captain, his departure marks a bittersweet conclusion to a career that defined Gabonese football for over a decade.

The veteran striker's decision to walk away from international duty is rooted in the fallout of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where Gabon suffered a premature exit in the group stage.

In the wake of this failure, the Gabonese government initiated a series of aggressive reforms, including the suspension of the entire national squad and the sacking of the coaching staff.

However, the situation turned personal for the 37-year-old forward when he and veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga were specifically banned from the team as part of the government's measures.

Aubameyang expressed profound frustration during a television interview, claiming he was unfairly targeted and scapegoated despite his physical sacrifices for the team.

He revealed that he had participated in the tournament while nursing an injury, making the subsequent public criticism even harder to swallow.

Reflecting on the treatment he received, Aubameyang stated, “They humiliated and smeared me even though I played at the AFCON while injured”.

He made it clear that the lack of institutional support was the turning point for his career, adding, “This is the last straw, and I'd rather stop here”.
